Pittsburgh Penguins: The "Core" Is Intact

Mainstream Media, Pre-Free Agency 2008: Marian Hossa has been the most valuable player for the Penguins in the finals against Detroit - his speed and creativity have been invaluable.  Jarko Ruutu, the consummate agitator, continues to frustrate opponents in Pittsburgh's quest for the cup.  Ryan Malone is a hard-nosed competitor who provides timely secondary scoring for the Penguins.  George Laraque is the league's heavyweight champion.  Ty Conklin is the league's top backup netminder, having filled in admirably for Pens starter Marc-Andre Fleury in his absence.  Gary Roberts has been a sensation in Pittsburgh, the fan-favorite veteran's revival is in full-swing.  Et cetera.

Mainstream Media, Post-Free Agency 2008: Brooks Orpik is a franchise defenseman.  Evgeni Malkin is the only line-mate Sidney Crosby will ever need.  Sidney Crosby can fly.  Hal Gill is only 24 years old.  Maxime Talbot doesn't suck.  Et cetera.

Worry ye not, Penguins fans!  The core is intact!
